What is the difference between ORZ and ARVI

In the cold season, especially in the off-season, epidemics of influenza and various colds begin. More and more people are rushing to the clinic with characteristic symptoms: sore throat, cough, runny nose, fever, etc. An experienced doctor, having listened to the patient's complaints, can easily make a diagnosis: ARVI or ORZ. Are there any differences in these colds? Yes there is.

What is ARD, ARVI and flu

And acute respiratory infections, and acute respiratory viral infections, and flu are infectious colds. The cause of acute respiratory disease (ARD) can be viruses, and bacteria, in rare cases - fungi. Sometimes the doctor makes another diagnosis, more specific, such as rhinitis or pharyngitis. This is also a colds, but the location of the defeat is specified:
  • pharyngitis - suffered a throat;
  • rhinitis - an infection in the nose;
  • tracheitis is a pathological process in the trachea;
  • laryngitis - bacteria or viruses in the larynx;
  • bronchitis - an infection got to the bronchi.
Naturally, the bacteria do not recognize these boundaries, so pharyngitis can easily turn into laryngitis, and tracheitis - into bronchitis. If not treated, the infection spreads further and further, capturing new territories.

A doctor can make a diagnosis of "ARD" if all signs of a cold have appeared, but he cannot determine the exact causative agent of the disease, although most often ARD is caused by bacteria. But, if he is sure that viruses have become the cause of the disease, then he writes ORVI instead of ORZ.

ARI we most often get sick after severe hypothermia, so the peak incidence is in the offseason. It is in autumn and spring that it is difficult to find suitable clothes, because it is often warm enough during the daytime, and it is cold at night and early in the morning. SARS is always caused by viruses that are transmitted from person to person. Hypothermia, weakened immunity also play a role, but still the main cause of infection is another patient.

One type of ARVI is flu. Most often it is the influenza virus that affects the respiratory tract of a person, but other viruses can also be the cause of the SARS, in total there are about 200. That is to say, any flu is an ARVI, but if an ARVI is diagnosed, then it is not necessary is about the flu.

Symptoms of ARI and ARVI

Symptoms of ARI and ARVI are very similar. With acute respiratory infections, discomfort first appears in the nose and throat, later the patient begins to sneeze, he is worried about a runny nose. In the first days, nasal discharge is clear and watery, and by the end of the week it becomes more viscous and changes color to yellow-green. When the disease is mild, there is no temperature, in severe form there may be a slight increase in temperature. Often worried about a sore throat, sometimes a dry cough is added to the symptoms, turning into a wet cough. Despite the fact that the disease is not dangerous, you should not refuse visits to the doctor, because without treatment complications may appear: bronchitis, tracheitis, otitis, sinusitis, etc.

Symptoms of SARS appear about a week after infection. They can be different, depending on what kind of virus caused the disease. So, adenoviral infection begins acutely: the patient's temperature rises sharply, cough and runny nose appear. Palatine tonsils increase, therefore it is difficult for a person to swallow. After 2-3 days, eyes begin to hurt, conjunctivitis may begin. Children often have a stomachache and diarrhea.

If it is a rhinovirus infection, then there is sore throat, dryness in the nasopharynx, the patient constantly sneezes. In the mouth - an unpleasant taste. Fever usually does not happen, the temperature rarely rises above 37, but the infected are worried about a bad cold. Sometimes there is a dry cough, eyes ache and water. Complications after this disease does not happen.

Respiratory syncytial infection is not dangerous for adults and adolescents, because it proceeds easily. Typical symptoms: runny nose and pain when swallowed, may be a low temperature. In young children, especially in infants, the disease is more severe, with respiratory failure, a strong cough.

Differences of flu and SARS

Influenza is much more dangerous than other acute respiratory viral infections. If after a cold, recovery occurs within a week, after which the person returns to normal life, then with the flu, recovery takes longer. Within a month after suffering the disease, weakness, dizziness, appetite decreases, a person gets tired quickly. Determine exactly whether it is the flu or SARS, it is possible, having passed the tests, but an experienced doctor will be able to diagnose according to the symptoms. There are characteristic differences between flu and other acute respiratory viral infections:
  1. The onset of the disease. SARS begins gradually, the symptoms make themselves felt within 1 or 2 days. Influenza begins suddenly, in a matter of hours, the patient’s condition worsens.
  2. Pain. With ARVI, a person complains of weakness, fatigue, but otherwise he feels good. With the flu, muscle pains are observed, an ache is felt all over, the head and eyes ache.
  3. Temperature. If it is ARVI, the temperature is rarely above 38, 5, within 2-3 days it drops, even if it is not knocked down. Influenza often occurs with a high temperature (39-40 degrees). It is hard to knock down, she holds about 3-5 days.
  4. Runny nose SARS is accompanied by a strong cold and tearing, the patient often sneezes. With the flu, a runny nose appears rarely or disappears within 2 days.
  5. Other symptoms. With the flu, the back of the throat and the soft palate may turn red, but there is no plaque. Sometimes sick nausea, children develop vomiting and diarrhea. When SARS throat is red and loose, you may receive a raid on the mucous membranes. Disruption of the bowel and nausea is not observed, although in rare cases there may be these symptoms.
Acute respiratory infections and acute respiratory viral infections in something similar, in the people often these diseases are called colds. But, even if you are sure that you just caught a cold and did not catch a dangerous flu virus, you need to be treated. By taking a sick-list, you will be able to recover in a week, whereas a running acute respiratory disease with complications will require more thorough and long treatment.
