Quilling: What is it?

Multicolored paper elements can become part of an unusual picture. Having mastered the basic techniques of this technique, you can immerse yourself in the world of applied creativity and show your imagination. Quilling makes it possible to realize any ideas, create both flat and three-dimensional compositions.

What it is?

Many people, having learned the main principles of this technique, call it the art of paper-rolling. This is quite true, since quilling implies the use of long strips of paper. They are twisted in a spiral, and then they are given the necessary shape. Fixing several similar spirals together, you can create separate elements for cards or frames, come up with unusual shapes and pictures.

The name of this kind of creativity comes from the English word "quill". In translation it means "bird feather". It is believed that it was the feathers originally used to twist the paper in a spiral. Quilling appeared a very long time (according to one version in the XIV century on the territory of Western Europe). His popularity had several ups and downs. So in the XIX century, he was considered one of the few noble ladies entertainment, but in the XX century, the representative of the fair sex was bored with this occupation. Now the popularity of quilling again increases, in many respects the accessibility of necessary materials contributes to this.

Directions and varieties

Currently, there are several notable directions for quilling, which have significant differences from each other. For European masters, simplicity and laconicism are more typical. They create works from a relatively small number of elements. The eastern school of quilling is more complex in execution, ready-made compositions often differ in jewelry filigree. The combination of the smallest details can give the impression of three-dimensional lace. Among the varieties of this technique, it is customary to single out contour quilling. Its distinctive feature is that twisted strips of paper are put on the surface with an edge. In certain compositions, ordinary quilling is harmoniously combined with a contour one.

Necessary materials

If you are only going to get acquainted with this type of applied art, you can limit yourself to a minimal set of the most necessary materials. To implement their own ideas, paper strips of different widths will be needed. The most commonly used strips are 3 mm wide and 7 mm wide, as well as 1 cm and 1, 5 cm. Note that conventional colored paper is not suitable for these purposes. After all, on the reverse side and the side of the rib, it is white. Strips can be cut by yourself or use a special device, having pre-determined the desired width. When choosing it is also necessary to consider the density of paper. Despite the fact that strips with different widths are used for twisting, their length rarely exceeds 30-35 cm.

The handle for quilling can be made of various materials. On sale there are both wooden and metal specimens. At the end of each such device is a small "fork". A strip is inserted between its ends and then it is twisted. An important feature is that the height of the "plug" must match the width of the paper strip. A very convenient acquisition can be a two-sided handle with different tip heights.

When gluing several details, a tweezer is useful. Within the quilling, it is convenient to use this accessory with an angled down spout. For fixation, PVA glue is most often used. However, it should be borne in mind that an excessive amount of it can lead to deformation of the paper. If you need elements of the same diameter to create a composition, use pre-prepared templates.

Quilling technique: basic elements

You can twist a strip of paper in different ways and this kind of creativity perfectly demonstrates this. In order to get a tight spiral, you will need to twist the strip and remove it from the handle only after fixing its tip with glue. If you want to make a "bagel", twisting the spiral, loosen it so that a free space appears in the center. A detail of the oval shape can be created on the basis of a "bagel". After making it, you need to press the paper with your fingers on both sides. If after you twist the tape, you loosen it and press it down on one side, you will get one more of the basic elements of quilling - a drop. Based on these simple forms in this technique, you can create various geometric shapes. They can also be used to decorate various crafts and compositions.

One of the main advantages of quilling is that even a composition made using basic elements looks effective. This kind of creativity is interesting for adults and children, because it allows you to create beautiful works at the initial stage. You yourself can vary the complexity of the elements that you decide to use.
